Website essentials for large enterprises

Array

When creating a website for a large business, there’s a lot to consider and every elements needs to be implemented successfully. Overlooking a single aspect will result in a poor user experience, poor Google rankings, or, in the case of cybersecurity, customer data being stolen and loss of trust in your brand.

We asked four heads of enterprises, web development, and SEO agencies to each choose one component they consider vital for an enterprise website to succeed. The responses cover elements of page speed, SEO, cybersecurity, design and internationalisation:

Enterprise Cybersecurity

With a small business website, the main risk is that someone will hack into your site and prevent it from working. While enterprises also share this concern, cybersecurity goes far beyond the web server. It’s also essential to protect customer data, cloud services, and APIs.

If your site’s down briefly, the problem’s gone as soon as you get it back up again. If customer data is stolen, it can have long-term legal consequences and damage your reputation.

Enterprises also need more layers of security. A study by Kaspersky reported that “26% of cyber incidents in businesses occurred due to employees intentionally violating security protocol”.

To provide this extra layer of protection, a zero trust policy is necessary. A zero trust network access (ZTNA) will verify all network requests, regardless of origin.

The most comprehensive way to implement ZTNA is through secure access service edge (SASE). This combines SD-WAN with a firewall as a service (FWaaS) and secure web gateway to ensure every user can only access the tools they need.

With ongoing monitoring and customisable permission levels, this gives large businesses the transparency and control they need.

Page speed

For enterprise websites, page speed is one of those most critical factors that sort of decide business success or not. When a site loads slow it can push people away faster, raise bounce rates, lower user interaction, and it may even drag down search engine rankings. In the end this can hit lead generation and revenue pretty directly. Enterprise sites usually have a lot of content, lots of dynamic features, and multiple integrations with third party tools, so performance optimization really needs to be baked in from the very start, not later.

What tends to work is doing regular performance audits first to spot the bottlenecks , then moving on to image optimization, enabling browser caching, minifying code, applying lazy loading, and also using a content delivery network (CDN). Just as importantly, teams should keep watching Core Web Vitals over time, and fix what’s wrong before it starts messing with the actual user experience.

Enterprises keep websites consistently quick by improving front end performance, trimming down unnecessary resource requests, and strengthening Core Web Vitals without forcing a huge rewrite or extensive redevelopment. If organizations treat page speed as an ongoing business goal, more than a one time technical chores, they can deliver a smoother and faster digital experience that helps users, supports search visibility, and helps long term business growth too.

Internationalisation and Enterprise SEO

Small business owners only need local SEO, targeting nearby customers in a specific region, be it a city or country. Enterprise SEO however needs to reach an international audience, often covering different languages with separate domains or sub-domains.

It’s essential to configure your hreflang tags correctly, as this tells search engines and LLMs which version of your site to show depending on the country and region visitors are in.

In 2026, due to the sheer volume of AI generated content out there, Google has to started to index less and less pages. Unless different versions of your site have unique content, Google may only select one page to show across all regions regardless of your hreflang tags. But how do you create quality unique content if you have a site with thousands of pages?

Amazon’s solution is both effective and simple: Change the default elements of the page so they’re different. Take a look at their UK and US menus, for example. They reorder and rename menu items, call the cart “Basket” on the UK site, and make lots of other changes, including which reviews appear on each site:

The above strategy also makes it easier to test what works for different cultures and tailor your structure based on subtle changes in language.

Translating Content

Large enterprises want to reach an international audience and to do so, they need to translate their website into multiple languages. In the age of AI, it can be tempting to use an automated translation tool to achieve this, however, while AI translation is better than it used to be, it has three major disadvantages:

  • The first is the quality of the translation. A brand’s message is nuanced, needs to be carefully tailored to the local audience, and must also be precise.
  • Google penalises content that’s automatically translated without proper editing. AI tools may also choose keywords with little search volume. This means your AI content will rank poorly.
  • It’s important to build backlinks to your content on a language-by-language basis, for example French backlinks to a French site. Site owners typically refuse AI generated content, so this aspect needs to be written manually.

To work around this, you can either add a message to some elements of your site that content is AI translated and accept that it won’t rank high with Google, or you can manually translate key pages with a qualified translator. I recommend identifying which pages are essential to translate well. These include legal texts, pages with high traffic, and content that is duplicated across multiple URLs.

By using this method, you will create a strong SEO translation within a reasonable budget.

Getting the above factors right are essential to help your site function well, remain secure, and generate organic traffic.
